Who are you and why do you have this site?
We are just common, ordinary people who believe that students are the CUSTOMERS of college - and we believe they absolutely have a right to voice their opinions.
What is the purpose of this site?
The purpose of the site is to be a resource for students. We feel that choosing a good college, with a good set of teachers, who guide you through the course of your academic life, is a rite of passage for every student. And we feel connecting with peers on EngageGuru.com has and will always be a way for millions of students to navigate this process. The site does what students have been doing forever - checking in with each other ' their friends, their brothers, their sisters ' to select a college and/or a professor to pursue their education.
Also, where else can you find out what others think of a college/professor? Is he/she a good teacher, do they challenge you, are they fair? When you have the option of choosing a college/professor, wouldn't you really like some information? It also gives you, the user, a place to voice your opinion. It gives you a place to make a difference in your education.
Today, our database includes over 1 0,000,000 professors; 5,000 colleges; and numerous student comments added daily.
Who can rate? Is it limited to students?
We prefer former and/or current college students to rate their college/professors of whom they have first-hand knowledge. It is not possible to verify that a rater had a particular teacher, so use caution in making decisions based on isolated ratings. Anyone can rate - students, professors, parents, neighbors, dogs, cats, etc.
How much does this website cost me?
Zilch! Registration to the website is absolutely free.
Why do I have to 'Create an account'?
You aren't required to have an account to use EngageGuru.com. But, creating an account gives you the opportunity to take full advantage of the site by following a certain college/professor, and to track and edit your ratings.
How do I cancel my account?
Go to the Contact Us section of the site and send us an email from the address you provided when the account was created. We shall do the needful.
Do I have to give you my name/email address? I do not want to invite trouble from my teachers or the administration.
We do not require you to submit such information per se. However, you do have the option to create an account to follow a certain college/professor and post it on other social networking sites for your friends to know what you've been up to!
How do I rate my college/professor?
This is a fairly simple process.
Search for your college/professor. Chances are you will find your college/professor listed with us.
You will find certain parameters on which you can then rate your college/professor.
If your college/professor is not listed you may suggest the same to us via the tabs given (Suggest College / Suggest Professor). Our admin will verify the details given by you and do the needful.
Don't students use this site just to get even with their teachers? Aren't most of the ratings negative?
Absolutely not. You might be surprised to learn that most of the ratings are positive.
How soon are my ratings posted?
Your ratings will reflect immediately on the site. But your comments will be monitored by the administrator.
Some of my comments got deleted. My professor really is a fat, ugly jerk. Why can't I say that? What comments are OK?
We are pretty picky and choosey about what gets posted and have some strict guidelines. You can find the guidelines when you 'Flag' a professor or a comment. Comments should be about their teaching, not their physical appearance. Every rating is reviewed, and we reserve the right to delete comments OR an entire rating.
What do professors think of this site?
Well, who knows! It actually depends on the professor going through the reviews. We get a lot of feedback/emails from professors/administrators telling us they like the site, and we've even had some telling us how the site has helped them know what the students feel and bridge the gap. And yes, we also get some pretty hateful emails telling us how inappropriate the site is, how they are going to shut us down, etc. Every coin has two sides you know.
What if I see a rating that I think should be reviewed again? I know you said you review all ratings, but what if you miss one that is not OK?
We agree there may be times when a bad rating skips our attention.
After each rating you will see a small button which reads Flag. When you click on that button, the rating is sent back to us to review again. If it really should not have been accepted, we will handle it. If the rating really is OK, we just approve it again.
What if I sight an error, like getting a teacher's name wrong or a fake listing?
After you click on a teacher, you will see 'Flag Rating' at the bottom of the page. Just click on that link and tell us what is wrong.
What do I do if I want to advertise on your site or partner with you?
You may please get in touch with us by clicking on the links for the same (Partner with us / Advertise).
Do I ever share my personal information with third parties?
I have a question. How can I contact you?
Click on the Contact link at the bottom of the page. We read EVERY email and respond to almost all of them. (No, we don't respond to threats to shut us down!)
